Following years of classical training at the Baltimore School for the Arts and Berklee College of Music, saxophonist Antonio Hart switched to jazz while attending CUNY–Queens College. He first gained critical and audience recognition for his work with Roy Hargrove, live and on the trumpeter’s 1989 album Diamond in the Rough. Hart went on to perform and record with groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Robin Eubanks, Dave Holland, McCoy Tyner, and Dee Dee Bridgewater. His debut recording as a leader, For The First Time, appeared in 1991 (RCA/Novus) and Hart has since released seven more albums including his latest organ quartet release, “Blessings”, out on JLP records. Another lasting contribution comes in the form of teaching for a dozen years at CUNY–Queens College, where he is a full-time professor of jazz studies at the Aaron Copland School of Music. Tonight at Jazz Standard he brings his organ quartet, complete with two of New York’s freshest rhythm section journeymen, along with a rare appearance by longtime Shirley Horn drummer Steve Williams. “Antonio Hart's astonishing technical prowess and melodicism are rare among musicians of his generation…” (The Washington Post)
