Writing for JazzTimes.com, Josef Woodard hailed Donny McCaslin as “a versatile player who moves easily between inside and outside musical zones” with “a fluidity and grace to his playing even when he’s pushing at envelopes.” Beginning with his 1998 debut Exile and Discovery (Naxos), Donny has released 11 albums as a leader. He has been a mainstay of the Dave Douglas Quintet, and received a 2004 GRAMMY Award nomination for “Best Jazz Instrumental Solo” for his performance on Concert In The Garden by the Maria Schneider Orchestra. The saxophonist was surprised and honored to be asked, along with his quartet, to collaborate with rock legend David Bowie on his final album, Blackstar: “It was in many ways a dream come true although I'm not sure I could have dreamed of such a thing…David was an inspiration to work with and Blackstar is a testament to the time Mark Guiliana, Tim Lefevbre, Jason Lindner, Ben Monder, and I spent with him last year.”
