Trumpeter Hugh Masekela has been the most famous name in the rich history of South African jazz since 1968, when “Grazing In The Grass” became his international pop breakthrough hit. His piercing horn lines adorned the Byrds’ “So You Want To Be A Rock ‘N’ Roll Star” and he was a special guest star on Paul Simon’s Gracelandtours of the 1980s. In a review of his 2013 double CD Playing At Work, Rolling Stone (South Africa) wrote: “From stylistic demands of several genres such as mbaqanga to funk, jazz, soul, house and back, Hugh Masekela traverses all with acute understanding, open ears and respect, and is not only dynamic and creatively receptive, but rare within a modern sphere of artistic creation.” Pianist Larry Willis was a key player in the pioneering jazz–rock band Blood Sweat & Tears for seven years, and also enjoyed extended stints with the bands of Nat Adderley and Roy Hargrove. He’s recorded many albums as a leader, beginning in 1970 with A New Kind of Soul and on up through 2012’s enchanting solo piano set This Time the Dream’s On Me. Jazz Standard is proud to welcome back this very special duo – make your reservations now!
